As I look at what is happening recently in our culture, I see lots of reasons to be concerned.
After all, there is not much stability anymore. Families are breaking apart, Churches are hurting, Neighborhoods are struggling, people are downright mean, Things are just plain bad. Really bad.
As I was thinking about these things, I began to get a little overwhelmed. Concern welled up inside my soul.
But then this morning, I found this. Sometimes the old scriptures talk directly to us, because God knows how we are feeling, and exactly what we are going through.
The Prophet Jeremiah writes this;
Jeremiah 17:5-8 New Living Translation (NLT)
Wisdom from the Lord
This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,
who rely on human strength
and turn their hearts away from the Lord.
They are like stunted shrubs in the desert,
with no hope for the future.
They will live in the barren wilderness,
in an uninhabited salty land.
“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit.
In this text from the book of the Old Testament that bears his name, the Prophet breaks it down for us today, without pulling any punches. Lets look close at what he writes. First, Jeremiah teaches us what to expect if we are putting our trust in mere humanity.
First off, we are cursed.
Second, we are like “stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future.”
And “We will live in a barren wilderness, in an uninhibited salty land.”
So basically, Jeremiah teaches us that if we do not put our faith in God, but focus on the things of humanity (worldly desires), that we have “NO HOPE for the future.”
Dang, It doesn’t get any clearer than that. But then he goes on to teach that those who trust in the Lord, “Are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water! Such trees are not bothered by the heat, or are worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and NEVER stop producing fruit!”
So, regardless of how bad it gets in this world, as long as our faith is STRONGLY rooted in the hope of the Lord, we will never go thirsty. His love will never run out. There will be no dry spells, no droughts in our lives that we have to fear!
MAN!! I love the old scriptures! Because God continues to use them today to empower and encourage his people.
I love you Lord, Thank you for this reminder. Help me to continue to sink my roots into your word.
What do you think??
Till next week,
